Wolverines Beach Seawolves
Saturday, October 10, 2009 George M. Sullivan Sports Arena, Anchorage, Alaska
The Wolverines got back to winning games tonight with a dominating six to one
victory over the Alaska-Anchorage Seawolves in the final game of the Kendall Auto
Classic. After playing to two straight two to nothing losses (going back to last
year), this team needed a win and now they have one. Hopefully this is the jumping
off point to a string of wins as this season gets into full swing.
The Wolverines got things started early, scoring the games first goal barely a
minute and a half into the contest. The Alaska goalie was playing the puck along
the boards behind the net, when Winnett skated in a stole the puck. Winnett
quickly sent a pass out toward the slot, however, it hit an Alaska defenseman
deflecting back into the net for the score. The goal was scored as unassisted.
With just over fifteen minutes to play the Seawolves were whistled for a penalty
to put Michigan on the power play. Less than fifteen seconds into the power play
the Wolverines had pushed their lead to two goals when Lebler defelcted a Summers
shot from the point into the goal for the score. Summers and Czarnik each picked
up assists on the power play goal.
Michigan would score their third goal of the game and period with another power play
tally with just a minute and a half left in the period. At the seventeen minute mark
a Seawolf was sent to the penalty box to give Michigan the extra attacker. The Wolverine
pressure finally paid off when Hagelin was able to get to an uncovered rebound and chip
the puck into the net for the score. Langlais and Rust each picked up assists.
The first period came to an end with the Wolverines leading by a score of three to
nothing. Michigan also held a twelve to six advantage in shots on goal after twenty
minutes of play.
The Wolverines would put goal number four in the net as the clocked moved under the
eleven minute mark of the second period when Chris Brown notched his first career goal.
Llewellyn got the puck into the Seawolve zone going down the left side. He centered a
pass to Brown who beat the defender, banging the puck home for the score. Llewellyn and
Rust each picked up assists on the goal.
With just over seven minutes to play in the period Rust would move from the assist
column to the goal column when he found the back of the net for Michigan's fifth goal
of the game. The play started with a three on two break by Michigan, which ended up
as a two on one rush with Rust finishing things off with the score. Brown and Langlais
each picked up assists.
The Seawolves would end the Wolverines shut out bid when they scored a goal with just
eighteen seconds to play in the second period.
The second period would come to an end with the Wolverines holding a five to one lead.
Michigan out shot the Seawolves seven to five in the period to hold a nineteen to
eleven advantage in shots on goal through forty minutes of play.
With the clock showing just under five minutes to play in the game Michigan would
notch their sixth goal of the game when Brown found the back of the net with his
second goal of the game and his career.
The game came to an end with the Wolverines winning by a score of six to one. Michigan
duplicated their second period shot totals out shooting the Seawolves seven to five
in the period to end the game with a twenty-six to sixteen advantage in shots on goal.
The weekend wasn't quite supposed to go the way it did, but in the end Michigan got a
win to get the season started with a 1-1 record. Getting that win Saturday night was
much needed, just to get that winning feeling back. It doesn't hurt that they have a
win to think about right now either as they do not play again until the twenty-second
of October when Niagara comes to Yost for a game.
